Savanna Refuge

Australia's savannas are a refuge for biodiversity of world significance. They are home to hundreds of species of native plants, mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians and tens of thousands of different species of invertebrates.

Biodiversity and conservation in the savannas

Savanna Biodiversity
This project began in 2004–05, partly evolving from the two projects below, and Biodiversity on grazing lands. The project aims to make existing information more accessible, to facilitate projects aimed at improving application of biodiversity information, and develop new products and projects to fill identified needs not currently being met. A new website from the TS–CRC will soon be available featuring this information.
Mammal Status in Northern Australia
Previous research by the Tropical Savannas CRC showed that some mammal populations appeared to be declining across northern Australia. This project is now assessing the status of mammals across the savannas.
Biodiversity Monitoring
This project seeks to find better ways to involve savanna industries like pastoral enterprises in the business of monitoring biodiversity. It is testing ways of monitoring biodiversity using such as perennial grass cover, Landscape Function Analysis scores, and landscape reflectance.
