NAFI fire website now covers Queensland

In 2007 the North Australian Fire Information (NAFI) fire-tracking site has extended coverage of bushfires down to the NSW border; and the site can now be used throughout rural and remote Queensland.

Fire-scar mapping across this region is being provided by the Cape York Peninsula Development Association with funding from a new NHT Rangelands Fire Project. Staff associated with the project will help promote the NAFI website across the southern and western regions of Queensland.

The site has some new features this year. Courtesy of Geoscience Australia, NAFI users can now view a regularly updated MODIS satellite image as a background to the other NAFI maps. As this image is always less than a day old, it can be used to identify large fire scars in a timelier manner than having to wait for the weekly fire scar mapping.

The MODIS image can also be used to check on cloud cover that may be preventing hotspot detection by satellites. In 2007 you can also download fire scar images from the map you are looking at on the NAFI site rather than having to download a fire scar map for the whole of northern Australia.
