Rights and responsibilities in land ownership and resource
management
Summary
The primary aim of this research is to investigate how
responsibility for land and natural resources is perceived,
constructed and expressed by rural landowners. A secondary aim is
to engage landowners in ethical discussion about multiple rights to
the environment and social responsibilities of land ownership.
The purpose of this research is to describe and explain the concept
of ‘responsibility’ in relation to land and resource
ownership and the role of landowners’ perceived
‘responsibility’ in land and resource management. An
understanding of how landowners perceive their responsibilities
will reduce conflict in property rights issues and can be used to
develop policy instruments that work with landowners to encourage
sustainable natural resource use on private land.
